The postcard depicts soldiers from the time of the russian tsar - Peter I. One of the soldiers holds a paper on which, in old russian, is written the Decree of Peter I on the celebration of the New Year in russia.
An approximate translation of this Decree:
"To consider the New Year not from September 1, but from January 1, 1700. And as a sign of this endeavor and the new century, it is joyful to wish each other a Happy New Year … On the central and passing streets, decorate the gates of houses with pine branches and juniper.
Shoot small cannons and guns, launch rockets and light fires."
